Ocean Waste Plastic

These days everyone has a cause and everyone wants to support everyone’s causes, and we all know the problems with plastic—but what the heck is ocean waste plastic? Why is it important and why are my shampoo bottles made from it? Hang in here with me, but let's go on a journey…

Did you know that the name Forecast came from Mark and Brittany’s vision for “Forecasting the future with fashion, hair and music”? Now, sit there and really think about that: When you walk into Forecast today you can see it—you see the big white walls with natural lighting, you see the plants, you see the art and you see the floors. You feel the vibe and now it all begins to fall into place.

But HOW in the world is this even relevant? It’s relevant because Kevin Murphy, one of the product brands that Forecast carries, has completely switched over to ocean waste plastic for their bottles!

Kevin Murphy’s vision for this project was to reduce waste and create a more sustainable world for us to live in by collecting the plastic currently in the ocean, melting it down, and reusing it for the product bottles. Now, this thought process about the future and the world we should be working for really seems to align with the culture that Forecast was created around, right?

What a beautiful thing when two worlds collide. But now let's get down to the tea. Per Kevin Murphy’s website these are the hard facts about waste and pollution:

  • Every minute one garbage truck of waste is dumped into our ocean (Hi—hello…eww!)

  • Eight million pounds of plastic enter the ocean each year (What?!?!?)

  • The world produces more that 300 pounds of plastic each year (Uhm, okay?)

  • Of that 300 pounds, 95% of that plastic is only used once (That’s it? Seriously?)

And if all that isn’t enough—

By 2050 if we don’t slow our roll there will be more plastic in our ocean than fish!

SAY WHAT? That is crazy to think about! If this is something that grabbed your heart strings and you want to make a difference and make some changes in your own life here’s what you can do!

  1. Reuse single use plastics: save your forks and spoons and give them a quick wash in-between uses! Save those plastic champagne glasses for the next party you throw, a little elbow grease washing them is so worth saving the turtles’ homes!

  2. Remember to bring your reusable plastics—grocery bags, coffee cups at Starbucks, etc. Bring your own straws and wash them in between. Make this just as mandatory as your phone and this will be a piece of cake!

  3. Register to vote! Get your voice heard and let's start the conversation about conserving the world we live in. The earth has given us so much, it's honestly the least we can all do to as individuals to recycle or stop letting the stores give us plastic bags! It all starts with a vote!

  4. Do your part in cleaning up: if you see trash on the ground, on the beach, in a park, around your work parking lot—pick it up and recycle it! Plastic isn’t biodegradable so it's not going anywhere unless someone who cares a whole lot.. does something about it!

Speaking of reusing single waste plastic bottles, did you know that if you bring in any of your Kevin Murphy product’s back to Forecast after they are empty that we recycle them for you? AND you get 10% your next retail purchase? That sounds like a win-win to me!

All in all, when you choose to get your hair done at Forecast, you choose sustainability: sustainability for the environment and sustainability for your look. After all, LOOK GOOD FEEL GOOD! You get to look good and you get to FEEL good about doing it with us at Forecast.

With love,

Stylist Alicia
